I was preparing some support material for the Quiet Music Festival grant application and I came across this pic of Ray and Doug at the Festival from 2008, thought you’d like it. Had to cut Leo out because he was too bright in that white Chinese plastic suit of his. By the way if you come across him wearing that suit, don’t shake hands, you’ll get a shock. The pure nylon works up quite a bit of static electricity.

Album recording set up

Since the release of the album people have been asking – How did you get that sound? Louie Prez’s album ‘Scam’ was recorded using old school methods. Not in a fancy studio, where we all came in to record our parts on a different day. Not in a complex set of studio rooms where we looked at each other through double glazed windows and listened to each other through ‘not quite right’ headphone mixes. We did it using the old school method of sitting in a small semi circle in a great sounding room, a set of stereo mikes for the room sound and some spot mikes to boost the sound of each instrument as needed. We used the Reception Room at Maribyrnong City Council precisely because it sounded old school. No digital trickery. In this photo you can see the set up of the mikes.

The last two tracks on the album were recorded back at my studio in 2 rooms. They were recorded live with no overdubbing

Along with the writing that Ray, Leo and Doug did for the album, here’s some pics of the other musicians that also play with Louie Prez. One of the background ideas of the album was that most of the tunes would be group devised. Bryan, Tim and Zvi are three of the musicians who sometimes play with Ray and Leo in Louie Prez and their input writing and playing on the album was invaluable.

This is a pic from the first album. Ray took one look at it and said: “It even makes it look like we like each other.” The photo was taken by Phil Greenwood who has that knack that good portrait photographer has of making you forget that they are there. We took this photo in Leo’s back yard and used it as our first press pic. One of the snappy punters took one look at it and said it looks like the CHEF the PIMP and the MOTOR CYCLE COP. Ray of course said: “We need to look like heavy weights” and “Don’t smile!” What do you think – serious enough for you? Something about that moustache makes Ray look deadly serious.
